- Un code- barres, I 00.00.01 I 01.01.01 I est la trame du tableau, tel un programme type sur la base duquel Astier développe l’œuvre avec le nombre 21 en binaire qui correspond à la date du 1er jour du XXI eme siècle (00h.00’’.01’) et (01,01,01).
- La 5eme dimension tend à la mise en évidence de l’infini hors du périmètre même de la surface picturale traditionnelle. « Astier n’a-t-il pas inséré au centre de sa toile, un cadre ouvert vers l’extérieur, situé entre deux mondes –celui de l’histoire personnelle de l’artiste comme celui de l’histoire collective … de la communauté des hommes en marche ? » (Joseph-Paul Schneider, LuxemburgerWort 01.04.1994 galerie Lucien Schweitzer). Alexis Astier peint dans le cadre et à l’extérieur du cadre ( les barrières sont tombées, la 5eme dimension est une invitation à la liberté et à la tolérance).
- La Supra-Surface revendique l’absence de délimitation précise. Elle affirme la non-existence du support et l’existence d’une surface sans limite. Elle a été exposée en avant première au salon d’art contemporain de Luxembourg en 1997. Ce concept prépare une révolution esthétique en poussant l’avant-garde jusqu’à son ultime étape. 1.000 carrés (ou éléments) posés sur un support en 3D apparaissent, dans l’obscurité, en lévitation pour former une surface plane : C’est la Supra-Surface où le spectateur devient acteur en entrant dans une représentation… mentale.
Le 1er ‘élément’ a été posé le 01.01.01 à 00h 00mn 01 seconde. Le terme du 1er tableau du XXI e siècle est fixé à la date , non déterminée, de la pose du 1000e et dernier élément.

A bar code I 00.00.01 I 01.01.01 I forms the basis of the painting, like a program from which Alexis Astier develops the whole work with the number 21 translated into binary language, the number 21 standing for the date of the 1st day of the 21st century (00h.00’’.01’) et (01,01,01).
The 5eme dimension (the fifth dimension) aims at revealing the infinite which breaks the limits of the traditional painting surface. « Astier n’a-t-il pas inséré au centre de sa toile, un cadre ouvert vers l’extérieur, situé entre deux mondes –celui de l’histoire personnelle de l’artiste comme celui de l’histoire collective … de la communauté des hommes en marche ? (Joseph-Paul Schneider, LuxemburgerWort 01.04.1994 galerie Lucien Schweitzer) ». “Astier has inserted in the in the center of the canvas a frame that opens out towards the outside world, in between two worlds, that of the personal history of the artist and that of the constantly evolving collective history of men”. Astier paints both within the frame and outside it (barriers have vanished, the 5eme dimension is an invitation to freedom and tolerance).
The Supra-Surface puts in emphasis the absence of clear, definite limits. It stresses the non-existence of the clear-cut painting support and the existence of an unlimited surface. This work was exhibited as a preview in the 1997 Luxemburg modern art exhibition. Its concept is the first step of an aesthetic revolution pushing avant-garde into its ultimate stage. 1.000 squares (called ’elements’ ) are laid onto a three dimensional support and appear in darkness, glowing and levitating, forming a flat surface: this is Supra-Surface, a work in which the spectator becomes an actor by entering a mental representation.
The 1st element was laid down on the support on Jan 1 2001 at 00.00.01 a.m. The completion of the 1st painting of 21st century is expected to take place on the still undetermined day when the last and thousandth element is laid down.
